Bringing Neurobiology

to life in your

clinical practice

Be engaged & inspired

Would you like to:
- explore and understand the neurobiological foundations that contribute to the whole person?
- become more intentional, targeted and individualistic in the way you serve your clients?

Neurobiology explores the processes that occur within the brain, body and mind, which influence a person’s development, mental health, behaviour and well-being.

This 12 hour online course will transform the way you approach your work.

Real-world examples and storytelling are woven throughout to make the content memorable and meaningful.  No prerequisite knowledge of neurobiology is required to participate in this course.

Captivating

Kim Barthel’s teaching style distils complex theories so they are accessible and engaging.

WHAT PEOPLE SAID

Hands down one of the best classes I've ever taken. It was so refreshing to have all the newest and most relevant information on what is actually occurring in the nervous system all in one course!

Why this course is unique?

This 12 hour (8 module) learning journey through the brain, body and mind, will offer a rich understanding of how brain and body circuitry operates as an integrated network. We’ll explore how this contributes to a person’s sense of identity, well-being and their relationship to others and the world.

Treatment models are based on brain-body science. Through exploring the neurobiological foundations that contribute to a person’s health and well-being, we can make decisions about what treatment model may be the most suitable, and meet people at their level.  It will help us to determine how to do what we do, and when.

Learning objectives

The following topics are covered, as they pertain to clinical reasoning within our practice. No prerequisite knowledge of neurobiology is required to participate in this course.

All modules will provide clinical examples about how to apply this new learning to clinical reasoning and practice

Module #1  - Neurotransmitters: The Backdrop To It All

Covers:

  • The role of neurotransmitters as a foundation of our brain, body and behaviour
Identify the contribution of neurotransmitters to the creation of arousal states

  • Explain how neurotransmitters interact with each other throughout daily function

Module #2 - Autonomic Nervous System: Integrated with Movement Sensation: Impact on the whole body

Covers:

  • Summarize the autonomic nervous system’s role in the regulation of emotional and behavioural adaptations

  • Describe the significance of the autonomic nervous system upon the posture and movement system

  • Recognize the interplay between sensory processing and the autonomic nervous system

Module #3  - Thalamus: Hub of Sensation

Covers:

  • Define the general role of the thalamus in sensory processing and its contribution to  interoceptive bodily awareness

  • Describe the specific role of the thalamus in visual processing and cognition

  • Identify the distinct interaction between processing of sensory input  in the thalamus and emotional regulation

Module #4 - Brainstem and Amygdala: The Seat of Emotion and Survival

This session will:

  • Identify the role of the brainstem and amygdala interaction as the foundation for survival adaptations

  • Recognize the interaction between the brainstem and amygdala as it contributes to arousal and sensory processing

  • Summarize the interaction between the brainstem and the amygdala as it contributes to posture and movement

Module #5 - Basal Ganglia: Refinement and Precision

Covers:

  • Summarize the role of the basal ganglia in attention and executive functions

  • Recognize the impact of basal ganglia dysfunction upon repetitive behaviours and micro-movements

  • Identify the role of the basal ganglia  in sensory processing and motor control

Module #6 - Cerebellum: Inhibition and Coordination

Covers:

  • Define the role of the cerebellum upon emotional regulation and mental health

  • Identify the role of the cerebellum as an integrator of sensation

  • Summarize the influence of cerebellar circuits upon executive functions and cognition

Module #7 - Insula/Anterior Cingulate: Interoception

Covers:

  • Describe the role of the anterior cingulate and insula in self-regulation

  • Summarize the interaction between the insula and anterior cingulate related to attachment and behavioural adaptations

  • Define the role of the insula and anterior cingulate related to interoception and mindbody practice

Module #8 - Right Prefrontal Cortex: Interpersonal Neurobiology and Psychotherapy

Covers:

  • Describe the role of the right prefrontal cortex in functions of attachment, self-regulation and co-regulation

  • Define the role of the right prefrontal cortex as an integrator of sensory processing and cognition

  • Summarize the integration of the various neurological structures  discussed in this course, and their collective contributions to our practice

  • Consolidation - pulling everything together.
